The cluster saving calculator shows whether a cluster tool pays for itself. A cluster punch makes several holes per hit, so machine time falls by 1 − 1/holes-per-hit. Example: 40 holes per part, 20,000 parts a year and a 4-hole cluster at 300 hits/min saves 33 machine hours and about $950 in the first year.

Cluster saving formulas

Tsingle = Nholes × Nparts / (R × 60) · Tcluster = Tsingle / HT in hours · R hit rate in hits/min · H holes per cluster hit
Saving = (Tsingle − Tcluster) × Chour − (Toolcluster − Toolsingle)

Cluster tools pay off on high-volume parts with regular hole patterns: ventilation panels, cabinet doors, filter screens and perforated guards. Besides time, fewer hits also mean less noise, less sheet distortion and less wear on the turret.

How to use the Cluster Saving Calculator

  1. Enter the holes per part and the yearly volume.
  2. Enter how many holes the cluster tool punches per hit and the machine hit rate.
  3. Enter the hourly machine cost and both tool prices.
  4. Read the time and cost saved, and the payback time.

Worked example

40 holes × 20,000 parts, 4-hole cluster, 300 hits/min, $60/h, tools $150 vs $1,200.

  1. Single tool: 800,000 hits / 300 / 60 = 44.4 h
  2. Cluster tool: 200,000 hits → 11.1 h → 33.3 h saved (75%)
  3. Saving = 33.3 × 60 − (1,200 − 150) = $950 in year one, then $2,000 per year
  4. Payback after 17.5 machine hours saved, about 6.3 months.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cluster punch?

A cluster (multi-hole) punch is a single turret station tool with several punch tips arranged in a pattern. Each hit punches all of them, cutting the number of hits on repetitive hole patterns.

When is a cluster tool worth it?

When the same hole pattern repeats many times per part and the yearly volume is high. Use the calculator: if the first-year saving is positive, the tool pays back within a year.

Does a cluster tool need more tonnage?

Yes. The force is the single-hole force times the number of holes per hit. Check it with the punching force calculator against your machine tonnage.
