How Pressure Vessels, Tanks & Oil and Gas Are Made

Pressure vessels and tanks are made from carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy plate, typically 6–100 mm thick, while drums and containers use thinner sheet. Plates are cut, rolled into cylindrical and conical shells on plate rolling machines, heads are pressed or spun, nozzles and saddles are formed on presses and press brakes, and everything is welded to code.

Roundness, accurate pre-bent ends and repeatable heads are critical because they determine weld fit-up and inspection results.
