Tube Bending Machine Basics

What Is a Tube Bending Machine?

A tube bending machine bends round, square and rectangular tubes by clamping the tube to a bending die and drawing it around the die to a set angle, while a pressure die, wiper die and mandrel keep the tube wall smooth and round. CNC tube benders add servo axes that feed, rotate and bend the tube automatically, producing complex 2D and 3D parts in one setup.

HARSLE tube bending machines bend round, square and rectangular tubes from Φ18 to Φ219 mm into precise 2D and 3D shapes for exhaust and fluid lines, furniture, fitness equipment, HVAC tubing, handrails and vehicle frames. Choose the CNC ProCurve series for complex multi-plane parts or the NC hydraulic EcoCurve series for economical bending of larger tubes.

Size a tube bender by the largest tube diameter and wall thickness you bend, the tightest centerline radius, the longest straight length between bends, and whether your parts are 2D or 3D — that decides between an NC hydraulic bender and a multi-axis CNC bender.

Selection Guide

How to Choose

Expert insights to help you choose the right tube bending machine for your tube size, shape and volume.

Understanding Model Numbers

The model number tells you the largest tube a machine bends: the series name gives the control type, the number is the maximum tube outside diameter in millimetres (rated on mild steel).

Model Naming Convention:

ProCurve 38 = Φ38 × 2 mm tube

38 = Max tube outside diameter (Φ38 mm)

× 2 = Max wall thickness at that diameter (2 mm)

ProCurve = CNC servo series, 2D + 3D bending (Φ18–Φ50)

EcoCurve = NC hydraulic series, 2D bending (Φ38–Φ219)

Selection Examples

Need Φ25 × 1.5 mm steel handlebars with bends in several planes?
Choose: ProCurve 25

Need Φ60 × 2 mm furniture frames with 2D bends only?
Choose: EcoCurve 63

2D or 3D Parts

Bends in one plane (frames, rails, U-bends) suit both series. Bends in several planes (exhausts, handlebars, fluid lines) need servo rotation — choose ProCurve, and add axes for full automation.

Bending Rules of Thumb

  • ≥ 1.5 × DRadius with mandrel
  • ≥ 2.5 × DRadius without mandrel
  • 190°Max bending angle
  • ±0.1°ProCurve precision

Tip: Send us a part drawing or 3D model — we check feasibility, die sizes and cycle time before you order.

Choosing the Right Size

Compare the standard models below, then check tube size, bend radius and material against your parts.

Larger EcoCurve models bend tube up to Φ219 mm — ask for the specification of your size.

Tube Size and Wall Thickness

Start from the largest tube outside diameter and wall thickness you bend. Ratings are for mild steel; stainless steel and thick-wall tube need more bending force, so choose the next size up for them.

Centerline Bend Radius (CLR)

The bend radius is set by the bending die. Tight radii on thin-wall tube need a mandrel and wiper die to prevent wrinkling and ovality; each machine lists its minimum and maximum radius.

Tube Bending Machine Comparison

ProCurve and EcoCurve together cover tube diameters from Φ18 to Φ219 mm. The key difference is control: servo-driven CNC for 2D and 3D parts, or NC hydraulic for economical 2D bending of larger tubes.

Tube Bending Machine Essentials

CNC Axes Explained

On a CNC tube bender, each axis is a servo motor that controls one movement of the tube. The more axes a machine has, the more of the bending cycle runs automatically — and the more complex the parts you can bend in a single setup, from simple 2D bends to fully automatic 3D shapes.

Axes marked optional are configured to order. Click to watch the CNC axes in action.

  • Y axis feeds the tube forward to each bend position
  • B axis rotates the tube to set the plane of the next bend
  • C axis drives the bending arm to the programmed angle
  • Z, X and A axes add die-layer changes, left/right bending and push assist
  • All axes run from one program with ±0.1° and ±0.1 mm precision
  • Y axis — FeedingThe servo carriage pushes the tube forward to each bend position.Standard
  • B axis — RotationTurns the tube between bends to set each bend plane for 3D parts.Standard
  • C axis — BendingA servo bending arm forms each bend to the programmed angle.Optional
  • Z axis — Up-downMoves the bending head between stacked die layers for several radii.Optional
  • X axis — Left-rightShifts the bending head sideways to change dies or bend left and right.Optional
  • A axis — PushingPushes the pressure die with the tube to reduce wall thinning on tight bends.Optional

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about CNC tube bending machines and HARSLE tube benders

Ask our engineers

What is a CNC tube bending machine?

A CNC tube bending machine bends round, square and rectangular tubes by clamping the tube to a rotating bending die and drawing it around the die to a programmed angle. Servo axes feed the tube to each bend position (Y), rotate it to set the bend plane (B) and control the bending angle (C), so complex 2D and 3D parts are produced automatically and repeatably.

What is the difference between ProCurve and EcoCurve?

ProCurve is a CNC series with servo feeding and rotation for 2D and 3D bending of Φ18–Φ50 mm tube with ±0.1° precision. EcoCurve is an NC hydraulic series for economical 2D bending of larger tube from Φ38 up to Φ219 mm.

How do I read the model number?

The number is the maximum tube outside diameter in mm on mild steel: ProCurve 38 bends tube up to Φ38 × 2 mm, EcoCurve 75 up to Φ75 × 3 mm; larger EcoCurve models bend tube up to Φ219 mm. Choose a model with some margin for stainless steel or thick-wall tube.

What does the number of axes mean on a tube bender?

Each axis is a servo motor controlling one movement: Y feeding, B rotation, C bending, Z up-down, X left-right and A pushing. A 2-axis machine automates feeding and rotation; 3-axis adds servo bending; 4–6 axes add die-layer changes, left/right bending and push assist for fully automatic 3D bending.

When do I need a mandrel?

A mandrel supports the inside of the tube during bending. It is needed for thin-wall tube and tight radii (typically below 2.5 × the tube diameter) to prevent wrinkling, collapse and ovality, and to keep the inner wall smooth.

What is the minimum bending radius?

It depends on the machine and dies: ProCurve 18 and 25 bend down to R5 mm, ProCurve 38 to R15 mm and EcoCurve from R30 mm. As a guide, 1.5 × the tube diameter is achievable with a mandrel and 2.5 × without.

Can HARSLE tube benders bend square and rectangular tube?

Yes. With dedicated dies, the machines bend round, square, rectangular and profile tubes in steel, stainless steel, aluminum and copper.

Do you provide installation, training and warranty?

Yes. Each machine ships with a mold set, an English manual and videos. Installation and on-site training are available on request, and online support runs 24 hours a day. Ask our team for the warranty terms of your configuration.
